A Message from the Executive Director of the Springfield Education Foundation
Dear Springfield Public Schools Community,
It is an incredible honor to introduce myself as the new Executive Director of the Springfield Education Foundation. It is truly a privilege to step into this role and serve this community that cares so deeply about its students, educators, and schools.
As I start this position, I want to acknowledge that I am stepping into some very big shoes. Christina San Filippo has led SEF with such passion and unwavering commitment for the past six years (and she has been involved for more than 10 years). She has many superpowers, one of which is her ability to genuinely connect and build meaningful relationships with educators, families, community partners, and more. She is deeply loved and respected, and we will all benefit from her impact for many, many years to come.
I am also grateful for SEF’s dedicated Program Coordinator, Ashley Mahlum, and to our board and donors, who invest in our mission of empowering student success every day. Together through our partnership Springfield Public Schools, SEF fuels teacher innovation, funds transformative learning opportunities, and invests in students — from grants that equip classrooms, to signature events that bring our community together.
I am thrilled to be a part of the remarkable impact SEF continues to have across our district—from $80,523 in grants awarded for the 2025–26 school year, to nearly $4.1 million invested in students since 1994. These numbers represent so much more than funding; they represent creativity unleashed in classrooms, confidence built in students, and opportunities that change lives.
What inspires me most is the spirit of partnership that defines SEF. Whether it’s innovative educator grants bringing welding, robotics, literacy, and watershed science to life, or community members rallying to raise $200,000 at the Night of 11,000 Stars Gala, our work is powered by people who believe in the promise of public education.
In the coming months, you will see me listening and learning — visiting schools, connecting with teachers and families, meeting with donors and community partners, and understanding how we can continue to grow our impact.
Thank you for the warm welcome many of you have already extended. I am excited to partner with you in supporting Springfield’s students and schools.
With gratitude and enthusiasm,
Sona Hodaie
Executive Director
